Sensors, Surveillance and Biometric
Technologies
Center of Excellence
Contracted
by the U.S. Department of Justice, IBG
established and operates the Sensors,
Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of
Excellence
to support
the Justice's law enforcement and
corrections biometrics and surveillance technology
projects, including concealed weapons detection,
through-the-wall surveillance, novel sensors, and
biometric technologies.
The Center provides
structured, actionable results and recommendations to
law enforcement agencies, corrections
organizations, courts, and crime laboratories
nationwide, generating accountable progress towards
practitioner needs.
The Center supports19,000+ law enforcement agencies
nationwide to identify technology needs, assess and
monitor NIJ R&D programs, test and evaluate
technologies, implement and oversee pilot and demo
programs in support of new technology adoption, develop
technology guidelines, and provide specialized
technology assistance and support.
The Center mission includes:

Hosting and supporting Sensors
and Surveillance and Biometrics Technical Working
Groups (TWG), and Aviation focus groups
-
Supporting NIJ in
developing R&D program objectives; and assessing
ongoing R&D projects
-
Evaluating R&D deliverables –
both through in-house testing and operational
evaluations in the field
-
Working with grantees to
facilitate transfer of technology to practitioners
and the commercial market
-
Providing feedback on criminal
justice requirements to
technology developers
-
Providing opportunities for
developers to demonstrate technology
