Center of Excellence Deputy Director Chris McAleavey, Senior Applications
Engineer Jerry Cook and Analyst Mary Collins discussed the three main
technology focus areas within the SSU portfolio of the Center:
- Concealed Weapons / Contraband Detection
- Enhanced Surveillance
- Novel Sensors
This webcast
includes:
- An overview of new and emerging sensor technology customized for law
enforcement applications
- Advances in millimeter wave technology for security screenings
- A history of NIJ investment in through-wall surveillance research and a
review of current systems in development
- Automated intelligence-driven video analytics software
- Recent technology installations and deployments
Center of Excellence in the News
Contracted by the U.S. Department of Justice, International Biometric Group
established and operates the Sensors, Surveillance and Biometric
Technologies Center of Excellence. The Center supports National Institute of
Justice law enforcement and corrections technology projects,
including concealed weapons detection, through-the-wall surveillance,
novel sensors, video surveillance and biometric technologies. The
Center provides hands-on expert services and engineering assistance to
19,000+ U.S. state and local criminal justice agencies.

The Center supports law enforcement agencies nationwide to identify technology
needs, assess and monitor NIJ R&D programs, test and evaluate
technologies, implement and oversee pilot and demo programs in support
of new technology adoption, develop technology guidelines, and provide
specialized technology assistance and support.
