IBG Biometric
Teleconference Series
IBG's latest free teleconference:
European Union Considerations for e-Passport, Biometrics, and Border
Control Programs, was held Thursday, April 24th, at 1 pm ET.
As e-Passport, Visa, and border control requirements continue to evolve in
sophistication and specificity, understanding these requirements is crucial for
deploying governments and the vendors who serve them.
IBG
Senior Consultant David Coleman spent 30 minutes outlining requirements,
specifications, and legalities EU Member States should consider when developing
e-Passport, biometrics, and border control systems, including:
-
Interoperability
and standards issues
-
System deployments
-
Projected
developments in EU Member States
-
Registration, enrollment, personalization, and issuance processes
Requirements, including EU-BMS, SIS-II, Prum Treaty and National AFIS Systems,
were considered in the discussion. Additionally, ISO and ICAO Machine
Readable Travel Document standards, and how they affect the European Citizen
Card and Residence Permits, were discussed. Mr. Coleman highlighted the
usage of e-Passport and Schengen Visa documents at the border from the
perspective of the border control officer and passenger, including use cases for
EU, US, and third party citizens arriving from Schengen and non-Schengen
destinations.
Finally, the use of PKI and biometrics for BAC and EAC compliant passports was examined, including usability of the advanced authentication mechanics, and
their dependence on external factors.
