IBG and IDG World Expo Announce
Executive Conference on Biometrics and Border Security
New York,
NY, and Framingham, MA—April 28, 2003—International
Biometric Group (IBG), the leading biometric consulting
firm, and IDG World Expo, the leading producer of
world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for
technology markets, today announced the first
BiometricsWorld Executive Conference on "Biometrics
and Travel Documentation: A Global Perspective on New
Standards, Technologies and Applications." The
BiometricsWorld Executive Conference will take place
June 3-4, 2003 at the Renaissance Washington, D.C.
Hotel.
The BiometricsWorld
Executive Conference features presentations from U.S.,
Canadian, European and Asian government agencies and
other organizations who are playing a role in how
biometrics are being incorporated into the travel
process. The event targets decision-makers responsible
for travel documents, border control and visa issuance;
policy influencers from government agencies worldwide;
and representatives from technology integrators and
vendors who seek a better understanding of the plans and
opportunities regarding biometrics and travel
documentation.
Projects
associated with biometrics in travel documentation are
enormous in scope. Annually, approximately 500 million
people present themselves at one of the United States'
422 ports of entry seeking admission to the U.S. The
Visa Enhancement Act states that the U.S. and all Visa
Waiver countries must include a biometric identifier on
all passports beginning in 2004. The General Accounting
Office estimates that the initial cost for incorporating
biometrics into border security as mandated by the USA
Patriot Act of 2001 and the Enhanced Border Security and
Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 could cost nearly $12
billion in the United States alone.
"International
Biometric Group has worked extensively with governments
around the globe to address the complex biometric issues
associated with border control, immigration, travel
documentation and visa issuance," said IBG Partner Raj
Nanavati. "Sharing information between government
agencies and industry is a critical step in ensuring
that these large scale, international systems work
effectively - BiometricsWorld provides a forum where
such an exchange of ideas and experiences can take
place."
The
conference will feature a full agenda covering:
-
The International Civil Aviation
Organization's (ICAO) newly proposed standards
-
Impact of privacy concerns for
biometrics and travel documents
-
Reports on pilot projects of
biometrics in travel documents
-
Technology advances in travel
documentation
-
Recent biometric testing results
-
The newest international data
exchange initiatives
-
Application of biometrics to
land and maritime border control
"Integrating biometrics
and travel documentation requires a massive amount of
international cooperation," said Darrell Baker, vice
president, event services at IDG World Expo. "IBG has
an expert grasp of the intricacies of this challenge,
and we believe the BiometricsWorld Executive Conference
will deliver very compelling, valuable
information."
